Ngamba island is a project of the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (CSWCT). It is an island located 23km from the shores/Entebbe main land in Lake Victoria and is part of the Koome group of islands, it covers about 100acres with 95 being forested. The sanctuary was put in place in 1998 October to render refugee to abandoned and orphaned chimpanzee’s therefore the major aim of the project is to protect these important species.

It is home to over 49chimps, the sanctuary aims at educating visitors, local communities and the general public about the chimps and the importance of protecting and conserving their fragile forest habitat.

The sanctuary can be accessed by boat either motorized canoe- taking 90 minutes or speed boat-45 minutes and by a charter flight from Entebbe airport or Kajjansi airfield-20minutes. Visitor activities include chimpanzee care giving and integration, chimps feeding, cruise on the waters of Lake Victoria, forest walk, volleyball and swimming among others.
